Some will call it a pipe-dream, some will call it a mid-life-crisis, I call it a dream come true.
We bought a farm.
I’ve always had a strong connection to the wide open spaces and giant skies of the land. My family was built on farming. My Grandfather came from Belgium to farm the rich Saskatchewan Soil and somehow a little bit of that prairie dirt made it into my veins.
I want to make it clear, besides riding around in the Combine with my cousins, or lending a hand on the Rutley farm, I haven’t really done a lot on the farm. We’ve decided we’ll start off small; chickens, a dog, and some farm cats. The chickens came first, almost by surprise!
Since we just moved the chicken coop wasn’t ready for 5 day old chicks, and so the brooding box has found a cozy home right next to the TV in the living room. Funny thing is we seem to watch the silly antics of the chicks rather than anything on the old boob-tube. It’s amazing to see how quickly they change.
Next up, dog and cats. We’ve been told it might be easier to get them at the same time so they don’t fight. I have a feeling that might be something we’re trying to believe. Not sure if that will be the case since dogs and cats by nature are enemies. We really want a good farm dog. A dog that will really keep an eye on the yard, chasing away critters of all kinds, but also friendly enough to play with a 3 year old child. We’ve had all kinds of people tell us what kind of dog to get.
If you could pick your favorite farm dog what would it be?
Other than that most of our time is spent unpacking the never ending mountain of boxes… I’m not sure we’ll ever unpack all of them.
Make sure to leave me some advice in the comments on our FB page and check back often for updates on the adventures of a green-horn farmer!
