You’d think no one could ever really dislike a dog. Sure, people may say they don’t like small dogs cause their yappy or really big dogs cause they take up a whole couch but dogs are man’s best friend; all shapes, sizes and breed, ya just gotta love all em’.
Well not if you are Wally Conron, the creator of the breed known as the Labradoodle. Conron created the first hypoallergenic Labra, the crossbreed of the Labrador retriever and the Standard, Miniature, or Toy poodle, while working for Guide Dogs Victoria in Australia.
Conron created the breed as a thoughtful innovation for a blind woman whose husband was allergic to dog hair back in the early 80’s. Since then, the Labradoodle has become a very popular dog choice but Conron now calls his invention a “Frankenstein monster” and his “life’s regret,”…EEP!
“Why people are breeding them today, I haven’t got a clue,” he said on an episode of the Australian Broadcasting Program (ABC)’s podcast Sum of All Parts.
According to Conron, the majority of labradoodles are “either crazy or have a hereditary problem,” with healthy examples of the breed “few and far between.”
He believes that people have gone too far with cross-breeding, which can increase a dog’s risk of congenital disease, particularly down the generations.
Many would disagree with Conron, with over 300 breeds of dogs exsiting, many of which have been created through taking distinctive breeds and combine their most notable properties.
