So yesterday I get home from work to find that Pete the dog is not around. That’s not unusual he often goes rooting around in the pasture or corals looking for something that stinks to roll in or an old bone to chew on.
Yesterday, in a way, was no different. He was indeed off in the pasture chewing on something. Only problem is this time, it was alive. You see our chicken coop apparently has a leak in it and all of our chickens, one by one, popped out of the hole only to be eaten by Pete. 2 of our Roosters managed to survive. Although they both lost a fair amount of those nice long tail feathers.
It was somewhat surreal when we actually discovered what had happened. Mainly because my daughter peeked in the dog house to see if Pete was laying in there. She didn’t see Pete when she looked in there though, she saw our big white Leghorn Rooster. The craziest part it that he was just standing there with his beak in the corner, it was like the ending of the Blair Witch Project. Creepy. Funny thing is t it’s like he thought, “well if the dog is out there killing everyone else I should be safe in here.” Genius!
Pete finally came around looking as innocent as apple pie, just happy to see us as always. We were even second guessing if he was the culprit, that was until he stuck his head in one of the bushes and popped out with a chicken carcass. It was at that moment that he realized he was in trouble. There was no “come”, there was no “leave it”, there was no “sit”, “stay” or “lay down”. The little bugger stayed just out of reach knowing he was about to be told “bad dog”.
My wife Megan loves those chickens. She would hear them crowing in the morning and say “I love those chickens”. Only problem is now that Pete has enjoyed a free chicken dinner he will only ever want more. So I said to Megan, we have 2 options, one is no chickens. She didn’t like that. Two is no dog. She didn’t like that even more. Then she said, “Or you can build a better chicken coop.”
Guess I’ll get out my hammer and try this again.
Pete’s lucky he’s cute.
