A new month means fresh goodies to check out on Netflix! Here’s the Aisle Seat’s preview of a six pack of brand new features to enjoy this coming month..
#1) ‘David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet’ (Oct 4th)
93 year old Attenborough, arguably the world’s most celebrated nature broadcaster/historian, takes an extended look at just HOW much the earth has changed in the nine plus decades he has been living on it….and what needs to occur if we’re all going to stay safe here long after he’s gone.
#2) ‘Hubie Halloween’ (Oct 7th)
If you thought that Adam Sandler’s dramatic turn in ‘Uncut Gems’ was a sign that the actor was veering towards serious material…..heeeeeeeee’s back. To being goofy. Sandler returns as…well, Sandler….in a family comedy about a community volunteer in Salem, Mass., who investigates a string of mysterious disappearances on Halloween. The film’s director, Steven Brill, has previously helmed such Sandler vehicles as ‘Little Nicky’ and ‘Mr. Deeds’ (y’know, if those credits are actually a positive for you). This one looks to co-star Kevin James (of course), Ray Liotta (say what?!) and a magic Thermos.
#3) ‘Social Distance’ (Oct 15th)
Okay, this sounds interesting. A lot of the stuff we’ve been watching the last few months while homebound during COVID-19 was shot BEFORE the pandemic began. But this anthology, from the producers of ‘Orange Is the New Black’, was conceived and created as a timepiece of this strange era; all eight episodes were directed remotely and filmed in the actors’ homes. And each tale tells of characters learning to adjust to ‘the new reality’. Now that’s a hook!
4. ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ (Oct 16th)
And here you have your ‘big event’ motion picture of the month. Directed by celebrated screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, this film is based ont he true story of the Chicago 7, a group of anti-war protestors who were charged with inciting riots during the 1968 Democratic presidential convention. Cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman. Like many big budget movies, it was originally intended to hit theaters, buuuut…
5. “Rebecca” (Oct 21st)
In 1940….yes, sixty years ago….Alfred Hitchcock directed a film version of the novel ‘Rebecca’ which went on to win Best Picture. While there was a TV miniseries of the tale in the 1990’s, no filmmaker has attempted to take on the story since….until now. Director Bean Wheatley has not only a darn fine cast for this romantic thriller, including Armie Hammer, Lily James and Kristin Scott-Thomas, but also a unique challenge. Hitchcock, decades ago, was forced by censors to change up one of the most pivotal plot points in the novel. Will Wheatley bow to the pressure as well, or stick to the book? I think we know the answer.
6. ‘Nobody Sleeps In The Woods Tonight’ (Oct 28th)
And finally, with Halloween by this point only a few sleeps away, a good old fashioned horror flick about teenagers, and the woods, and…..well really, isn’t that all you pretty much need?
