The Battlefords Provincial Park area is seeing significant improvements to its roadways.
Battlefords MLA and Saskatchewan’s Minister of Highways, Jeremy Cockrill, spoke at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday at the park entrance to announce the project completion.
Cockrill is excited to get the work done.
“This is a pretty popular park for people in town and also for people around the province,” he said. “So, to see some new asphalt and have a smoother road in and out of the park is going to be fantastic for the whole region, and for everybody to do business in.”
The upgrade work involved paving a total of about 24 km of roadway, covering Highway 204 going into the park, a stretch of road on Highway 4 North, north of Territorial Drive, just outside of North Battleford, and improving the roads inside the park itself as well.
Cockrill said in order for people to enjoy all the amenities the park has to offer, it’s important they are able to get there safely and smoothly. That’s why the project was so important to complete.
“We are creating better roads to and through the parks here at the Battlefords Provincial Park,” he said. ” We are pleased to announce the completion on a $9.5 million road construction project here.”
The project was started over the summer and should be finished in the next couple of weeks.
Potzus Paving and Road Maintenance Ltd. out of Yorkton was the general contractor for the initiative.
The project was funded through the provincial stimulus package and partnership with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport.
Cockrill said the province has made significant investments in recent years for improvements to Saskatchewan provincial parks because they are seeing increased traffic from more people enjoying the parks area.
Cut Knife-Turtleford MLA Ryan Domotor said the improvements to the Battlefords Provincial Park area will help traffic flow, especially during the summer months when more people come to the area.
“It’s very important to not only North West Saskatchewan but the province as a whole,” he said. “There are lots of residents that use this facility for their recreational needs. It’s a beautiful park, and a beautiful golf course. We couldn’t ask for more up in the North West. This is just going to enhance it, and make it safer for the people who are coming with their campers and camping on weekends.”
