The City of North Battleford will honour Indigenous veterans by lowering city flags to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Indigenous Veterans Day.
Nov. 8 is recognized nationally as Indigenous Veterans Day. According to the federal government, it is a day to honour and acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous veterans in Canada’s wars and peacekeeping missions.
In a media release, North Battleford city officials say they’re thankful for the freedoms we have and thank Indigenous veterans for their service.
“The City of North Battleford is honoured to gather on Treaty 6 Territory and the homeland of the Métis and would once again like to thank all Indigenous, Métis and Inuit Veterans who protected and fought for the many freedoms we enjoy every day.”
The city also says it wants to honour First Nations, Metis and Inuit veterans who are currently serving in Canada’s military as well.
In the week leading up to Remembrance Day, the city will be flying the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy flag. The poppy flag will be raised at a ceremony Monday, Nov. 7 at 10:00 a.m.
