The 2024 North West Best of the Best (BOB) Awards have been officially announced.
Some of the winners include Tanya Nachtegaele picking up the award for Best Teacher, Noel Stone Jr. who garnered the Best Paramedic award, and Daniel Stokalko voted the Best Young Citizen.
Stokalko is thrilled about receiving the honours in his category. The 29-year-old from the North Battleford area volunteers with the Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation, as well as the Svoboda Dancers Ukrainian dance club among his efforts, when he isn’t busy with his position working at the Gold Eagle Lodge. He previously received a separate Junior Citizen of the Year award in North Battleford in 2012, so volunteering has long been a passion for him.
“It kind of feels surreal,” he said of receiving the BOB award. “It’s not something I expected to be nominated for, or to win. I’m super honoured. Wow!”
Stokalko, with pro dancer Shannon Rask, recently raised the most donations for participating in the “Swinging with the Stars” BUH Foundation fundraiser.
Stokalko enjoys volunteering with groups in any way he can.
“The world is sometimes a pretty dark place, so it’s nice to try to be that little beacon of light for some people,” he said.
Stokalko volunteers because he enjoys keeping busy and embarking on new adventures.
“I like experiencing new things, and the only way to do that is to put yourself out there,” he said. “If I can do good while I’m having those new experiences, that’s even better.”
Winners of the 2024 BOB Awards were named in the following six categories: Arts and Entertainment; Food and Drink; Health, Beauty and Style; Local Goodness; Shopping and Services; and Sports and Recreation.
