As one could imagine, playing ice hockey in Africa would have some challenges.
First off, finding somewhere to play can be almost impossible. Outdoor rinks don’t exist and indoor rinks are hard to come by, only one for all of East and Central Africa! As for finding hockey equipment at the local sports shop? Yea, right.
But for the Kenya Ice Lions, the country’s only hockey team, the problem was less about the how and more about the simple fact the Ice Lions didn’t have anyone to play against…
This fact didn’t stop the team from holding weekly practices but it did limit the team to just inter-team drills and shinny.
That is until our hockey loving coffee provider Tim Horton’s heard about the team and flew them to Canada for their first ever real game.
The Kenya Ice Lions were outfitted with all new gear and personalized jerseys for the big event and before they took to the ice, the team was surprised with a couple of heavy hitters to add to their roster. Hockey super stars Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon.
