There are some days when I look at what I do for a living and I kind of think to myself, “Ha, what a joke. I get paid to play music and talk about stuff“. It comes easy to me and really is pretty fun. Every now and then I wonder if what I say on the radio ever makes it through. I question if someone is actually listening.
On Friday May 10 I started my day like any other work day. I got up showered up, fired up the truck and rolled in. That’s where things started to change. Instead of my regular path to the station I pulled in at the Battlefords Union Hospital. It was Radiothon day. Yup, that’s a big one. Partnered up with Fisher’s Drug Store and our friends at the BUH Foundation we were gearing up for our biggest day of radio for the WHOLE year.
For the past 12 months our radio stations were asking you to get ready for this day. Plan fundraisers, talk with your loved ones about making a donation, get ready to give in whatever way you can. We had commercials running, we had special interviews, and all of our announcers were talking about it… a lot. But did it actually sink in. Were all the people out there in “radio land” listening?
When the BUH Foundation asked us if we would be willing to do another radiothon in support of their campaign to purchase a new Mammography unit the conversation was kinda like,
Us: “Yeah that sounds like a good idea, a lot of people have been touched by that disease. How much do we need to raise?”
BUHF: “Over 500,000 dollars.”
Us: “——Um, what?”
BUHF: “It’s gonna cost over half a million dollars to replace it.”
With price tag like that you can probably see why it took a second to process it. When you consider that the closes we ever got to a number like that was when we raised just over 474,000 for the new CT scanner 4 years ago. And despite our best efforts we still fell short of the goal of 600,000.
We decided to go for it and really put the power of our radio stations into action along with the long reach of the BUH Foundation an it’s volunteers we figured we might have a shot at it.
For the past 12 months I have seen that giant number of $500,000 looming before me. For the past 12 months I’ve wondered if we were doing enough. For the past 12 months I’ve wondered if anyone is listening.
On May 10 you showed up. You were listening! You fund raised. You passed a hat. You busted open the piggy bank. You found every dollar possible and you gave, and gave, and gave some more!
