Life at our new home has included it’s own share of adventures. Some fun, some frustrating, but none have been more fulfilling than the adventure of Pete the Dog.
One of the first things people ask me when I tell them we bought a farm is “So did you get a dog? “. Fair question and I thought it was a good idea to boot. On the farm a dog can keep an eye on the house when you’re not around, chase critters out of the yard, and be a companion for the whole family.
We started by employing the use of social media to poll our friends and family and ask what type of dog we should get. There were so many suggestions that it made my head spin. Every breed seems to have pluses and minuses. No balance anywhere. I thought wouldn’t it be nice if you could take the good qualities of one breed and steal a couple other good qualities of another and just make the perfect dog.
LIGHT BULB
Isn’t that why they mix breed dogs? I’ve heard the more the merrier! A good ol’ Heinz 57 is supposed to be the most intelligent and best dog you can get. You get all the best traits from every brand… right?!
We decided to take a trip to visit the Battleford’s Humane Society. My goodness what love those people have for animals. It honestly fills my heart to see the bonds that Michelle and her staff have with each of those fuzzy little buggers. Make sure to stop and see them in the Agrivilla at the Fair today and tomorrow.
After meeting some wonderful dogs we met Pete. He is a cross between a lab and a terrier (pit-bull is a misnomer by the way) and he was instantly a part of the family. Gotta give a huge shout out to our friend Lisa who helped us understand a little more about why Pete is the best dog ever.
Since he’s come to join us on the farm he has done all of the wonderful things we had hoped he would. Although he has yet to bark at the coyotes when they yip and howl. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. He’s eaten his fair share of gophers and mice; gone on hikes with the kids through the pasture; sat watchfully on the front step while we head off to work in the morning; and offered more love and affection than you can imagine…
He has also learned that it’s easier to catch gophers if you’re underground with them, only problem is the holes aren’t big enough for Pete. No problem he makes ’em big. Like real big.
He also loves to play with the farm cats. And by play I imagine if a dog could laugh he would be splitting his side every time he chases them up a tree. That’s a good time for ol’ Pete.
Pete is also great at making friends especially with the neighbours cattle. I don’t know if they like him. If they do they have an odd way of showing it… he often comes home covered in poop. Fresh stinky cow poop.
But the goofy antics of this sweet mutt far outweigh the occasional challenges. Pete’s a good dog. Yes he is!
