After the many jokes about the coronavirus lockdown turning into The Purge, a horror flick depicting an annual day where crime and murder is completely legal, the distinctly recognizable siren was played through the streets of Louisiana.
After reaching 16,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 582 deaths in the state, a curfew was put in place for citizens to be inside their homes between 9pm and 6am or risk a fine.
Finally, spring is here but people are not! Streets are eerily quiet, looks like something from the Purge! pic.twitter.com/6Gb5KUl2Wk

Everytime I go out I notice more and more rubbish #graffiti on the walls in the locality. #PortobelloRoad is starting to look like a dystopian future or something out of #ThePurge! #LadbrokeGrove #Vandalism #London #WestLondon pic.twitter.com/NnycGnGlgg

However, this dystopia became all too real for the residents of Acadia Parish who heard the purge siren coming from Crowley Police cars implementing the curfew.

Playing the siren from The Purge to keep people inside…— Joanne Wilder (@joannewilder) April 8, 2020
Crowley Police chief, Jimmy Broussard, told KATC News he had no idea the sound was associated with The Purge. He also said he doesn’t plan on using any type of siren moving forward.
According to Acadiana’s News Channel The Acadia Parish Sheriff, K.P. Gibson, issued a statement on behalf of his department:
“Last night a “Purge Siren” was utilized by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew. We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in this process. We were not involved in the use of the “Purge Siren” and will not utilize any type of siren for this purpose. Calls regarding this matter should be directed to the Crowley Police / Chief Broussard and not the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office.”
