This week campgrounds around the province that were previously closed were re-opened and campers are enjoying the natural beauty of Saskatchewan. The hiking trails, the bird watching (or dodging in the case of Canada Geese), the crackling sound of a campfire, and the Lakes.
Ah yes, the joy of getting out on the water to do some paddling, maybe some fishing, or perhaps… tubing!
Yes the lakes have so much fun to offer! I remember as a kid clinging for dear life to the old “Sea Biscuit” and inevitably getting bucked off as dad whipped me and my brother Robb through a chaotic soup of criss-crossed waves crashing into peaks that seemed to tower meters above sea-level.
Some may think it would be terrifying, and if I told you it wasn’t I’d be lying, but it was worth it for the Hero’s welcome I got when the boat would circle back to pluck my waterlogged butt out of the drink. The laughs. The cheers. The reenactment of “what you looked like” from all those too afraid to step from the boat to the tube.
The comments and laughs would carry on until we were all back huddled around the fire, trying to shake the cob-webs from our heads as the adrenaline wore off and bedtime became a reality. Had to get a good sleep so I could give a repeat performance the next day. Those memories are priceless. Some of those wipeouts are still talked about to this day up and down Metinota Beach.
So, how’s camping been?
