I loved going to camp as a kid. I remember when the camp councilors would visit our school in the spring to tell us about how amazing camp is and all of the cool things you would get to do. Hiking, Fishing, Canoeing, and more! At camp I made some memories that will last forever. Like the time Lance lost his sun-glasses down the out house hole. Or the time me and Rob made fishing rods from sticks, string, and old pop cans from the canteen.
My friend Diane recently shared this poster on her Facebook page about this incredible First Nation Cultural Camp! The Battlefords are on Treaty Land and we are all treaty people so I think it’s important for all of us to remember where we come from. This camp is an amazing opportunity for memebers of our First Nation communities near the Battlefords to dive into Culture!
Happening at Blue Mountain in September, this camp is going to dive into traditions of Hand Games, Snaring, Hide Tanning, and more! I’m so happy to see a focus on Tradition throughout our community. One of my favorite memories from elementary school was when Mr. Albert came to our class in Grade 3 to tell us about First Nation’s Culture. We even had a field trip to his home and got to go horseback riding! It was so cool, but it won’t hold a candle to this.
Now Here’s the twist… My memories are connected to when I was young but this camp is for adults!
My Friend Alexis is going to this camp and she says she can’t wait because we often lose our connection with the land as we grow older. Camping in nature, running through the trees, laying in the grass, looking at the stars. It’s going to be amazing!
If you are from any of the First Nation Communities listed on the poster and believe in the importance of learning about and sharing traditions and culture you should register!
