The holiday season is fast approaching, and with theaters once again closed, leave it to Netflix to gift us with a few goodies.
Here’s a handful of new, original films to stream during the month of December..
Angela’s Christmas Wish (December 1st)
We start with one for the family. An animated sequel to the much beloved 2017 ‘Angela’s Christmas’, the film has a determined Angela making a heartfelt plan to reunite her family in time for the holidays.
Mank (December 4th)
David Fincher (‘Fight Club’, ‘The Social Network’) directs this black and white (old school classic Hollywood, baby) drama about the making of ‘Citizen Kane’, long considered the greatest motion picture of all time. Gary Oldman headlines as ‘Kane’ scriptwriter, Herman Mankiewicz. Shouldn’t come as a surprise that ‘Mank’ is getting serious Oscar buzz. Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins and Arliss Howard also star.
The Prom (December 11th)
Few know elaborate song-and-dance spectacular’s like Ryan Murphy, the main mind behind ‘Glee’. He directs this Netflix original, a glitzy showstopper, featuring a mammoth cast; Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden and Kerry Washington, to name a few. In it, a high schooler who wants to take her girlfriend to prom has to go up against the local PTA to achieve her dream, but gets some assistance with the arrival of some Broadway stars.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (December 18th)
The final leading role for Chadwick Boseman, this adaptation of August Wilson’s stage play features Viola Davis as the titular character, a legendary blues singer, in a battle with her manager. Denzel Washington is the producer for the film, which should also be in the conversation come awards season.
The Midnight Sky (December 23rd)
George Clooney directs and stars in this Netflix sci-fi original, playing a scientist in the Arctic, trying desperately to prevent a crew of astronauts from returning to earth in the midst of a disaster. Not exactly a good definition of escapism, given the events of 2020, but…..hey…..c’mon. It’s Clooney. You know we’ll watch.
