Due to the extreme cold, school divisions in the Battlefords-Meadow Lake area have cancelled bus services for today.
Environment Canada is reporting extreme cold warnings for the area and calling for a low of -51 Celsius with the wind chill. The temperatures will continue to be frigid on the weekend with -56 Celsius with the windchill forecast on Saturday. People can experience frostbite in minutes with these conditions so are asked to be careful.
Light of Christ Catholic School Division said it’s cancelling its in-town school buses for North Battleford for today. Buses will not be running due to the extreme cold temperatures. If parents want to drive their children to school instead, they can do so, as the schools will still be open.
Living Sky School Division (LSSD) is cancelling its school buses today as well. Buses will not be running for all in-town and rural routes. Schools will remain open should parents or guardians choose to drive their children to school. Families are invited to check the LSSD Transportation Status Page on the division website for future updates.
Moosomin First Nation School is also cancelling its school buses for today. The school said according to its policy, when the weather drops to -35 Celsius and colder, it will have to cancel bussing. There will be no school for students. Staff will still be required to resume work duties, so it will be a 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. workday for them.
Northwest School Division in the Meadow Lake-Lloydminster and surrounding area announced on its website all its school buses are cancelled for today as well.
